Italian Grand Prix 2026: Antonelli Produces a Monza Miracle as Piastri Battles for McLaren
The 2026 Italian Grand Prix delivered exactly the kind of drama Formula 1 fans expect from Monza — incredible speed, aggressive overtaking, strategy gambles and an unforgettable home victory.
Kimi Antonelli produced one of the performances of the Formula 1 season, charging from 19th on the starting grid to win his home Grand Prix for Mercedes. George Russell completed a Mercedes one-two, while Max Verstappen claimed the final podium position.
For Australian fans, much of the attention was on Oscar Piastri. The McLaren driver finished fifth after an intense late-race fight with teammate Lando Norris, continuing a season that has brought plenty of challenges for the Australian.
Antonelli Creates History at Monza
Few would have predicted Kimi Antonelli as the race winner when the Italian lined up 19th on the grid.
Power unit changes had pushed the Mercedes driver towards the back, leaving him with an enormous challenge at one of Formula 1's fastest circuits.
But Antonelli wasted little time moving forward.
He aggressively worked his way through the midfield before eventually putting himself into contention with the leaders. His combination of straight-line speed, overtaking and tyre management transformed what looked like a damage-limitation weekend into one of the most memorable victories of his young career.
A Virtual Safety Car later became an important moment in the race.
Mercedes brought Antonelli into the pits for fresher tyres while Russell remained on older rubber. That decision eventually gave Antonelli the grip he needed to chase down his teammate.
With only a few laps remaining, Antonelli completed the move for the lead.
He crossed the finish line around four seconds ahead of Russell to trigger huge celebrations among the Italian crowd.
The victory also made Antonelli the first Italian driver in 60 years to win the Italian Grand Prix.
Mercedes Dominates the Headlines
While Antonelli received most of the attention, the Italian Grand Prix was also another demonstration of Mercedes' strength in the 2026 championship.

Oscar Piastri Finishes Fifth After McLaren Fight
Australian Formula 1 fans had plenty to follow throughout the race as Oscar Piastri battled near the front.
Piastri originally qualified third but received a three-place grid penalty for impeding another driver during qualifying, dropping him to sixth on the official starting grid.
Despite the setback, the Australian remained competitive throughout the Grand Prix.
Piastri spent significant periods fighting with some of the fastest cars on the circuit, including Antonelli, Verstappen and teammate Lando Norris.
The closing stages produced one of McLaren's most interesting moments of the afternoon.
Norris and Piastri found themselves separated by very little as they battled over fourth position.
Norris ultimately crossed the line fourth, only 0.197 seconds ahead of Piastri in fifth.
The result gave Piastri another ten championship points, taking him to 116 for the season and seventh in the Drivers' Championship.
It may not have been the podium Australian supporters hoped for, but Piastri again showed that he can remain competitive in tightly contested races.
Verstappen Returns to the Podium
Max Verstappen also enjoyed a strong afternoon at Monza.
Starting fifth, the Red Bull driver steadily moved forward and eventually secured third position.
Verstappen was involved in several battles during the race and looked significantly more competitive than he has at some other points during the season.
He eventually finished more than ten seconds behind the Mercedes pair but comfortably secured the final podium position.
With 127 championship points, Verstappen currently sits sixth in the championship standings, just ahead of Piastri.
Ferrari's Home Race Turns Into Disappointment
The Italian Grand Prix is traditionally one of Ferrari's biggest weekends of the year.
Thousands of passionate Tifosi arrive at Monza expecting to see the famous red cars fighting at the front.
Unfortunately, Ferrari's 2026 home race became a frustrating afternoon.
Charles Leclerc's race ended dramatically following a crash early in the Grand Prix.
The incident occurred on the second lap and resulted in the race being stopped.
That left Lewis Hamilton carrying Ferrari's hopes.
Hamilton continued and eventually brought his Ferrari home in sixth place, earning eight championship points.
For a team racing in front of its home supporters, however, sixth place and a retirement represented a disappointing return from a weekend carrying enormous expectations.
Ferrari remains second in the Constructors' Championship, but Mercedes continues to extend its advantage.
Gasly's Incredible Pole Ends With Seventh
One of the biggest surprises arrived before the race even started.
Pierre Gasly stunned Formula 1 by putting Alpine on pole position.
Gasly's qualifying performance placed him ahead of George Russell and initially Oscar Piastri, creating expectations of a potential shock result.
Unfortunately for Alpine, its race pace could not match its qualifying speed.
Gasly gradually dropped down the order as Mercedes, Red Bull, Ferrari and McLaren drivers found their way past.
He eventually finished seventh.
